Light: Logic Not Magic

Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind when modifying light is to rely on logic - not magic! Light behaves in very predictable ways and to "paint" with it you must understand where it is going and what effect it is going to have on your image. It's also important to remember that any light that is not directed at the subject or toward a bounce surface that is redirecting it toward the subject, is "lost" . . . negatively impacting recycle time and battery life while having no impact whatsoever on the photograph.

I have always hated using my flash because of the harsh light. A friend said I should get a LumiQuest Pocket Bounce. So, I have been on your website to understand more about your products. I am now learning more about light that I had no idea about. So, if I am understanding correctly when I see people using a stofen or Fong thing in rooms with high ceiling or outdoors they are wasting light with little impact on what they are shooting. What you say makes a lot of sense, so why would photographers being using these products incorrectly?

You are soooo right! It really doesn't take much "head scratching" to understand that distributing the light over 180 degrees while photographing 40 degrees doesn't make much sense unless that light is bounced off some nearby surface back into the frame. My guess is that these photographers have seen others doing it and just assume it serves some useful purpose. I'm not picking on Stofen or Fong here...our UltraBounce is often misused in the same way. ..go figure!
